Recognition Awards

Youth Baseball/Softball Coach and Volunteer of the Year Awards
The Portland Beavers teamed up with Friends of Baseball in 2008 to develop an award that recognizes deserving coaches and volunteers for their tireless efforts in assisting youth in their communities.  Both organizations share the belief that participation in organized sports plays a vital role in the overall well-being of today’s youth and that it is important to pay tribute to those that give of themselves so this opportunity is available for our kids.  To commemorate their accomplishment and to assist in funding future development of their team or league, the Coach and Volunteer of the Year honorees were recognized at a Portland Beavers game during the team’s Youth Baseball and Softball Weekend where they were presented with a $1000 check and a commemorative plaque.

If you would like more information on these awards and to submit a nomination, please download the Coach/Volunteer of the Year Awards document.

High School First-Team All-State Baseball and Softball Recognition
Each season the Portland Beavers team with their parent organization, the San Diego Padres, to recognize all of the High School First-Team All-State Baseball and Softball student athletes in Oregon.  Each honoree is invited to participate in a special on-field recognition ceremony prior to a Beavers home game during the summer.  All of the 150 student athletes, representing high schools from 1A thru 6A, are presented with a commemorative plaque in recognition of their outstanding efforts.

Fred Meyer Homestand Heroes
The Portland Beavers recognize that being a successful person is about more than just winning the big game.  With this in mind, the Beavers teamed with Fred Meyer to develop an award that honors area high school baseball and softball student athletes who exemplify the attributes of a winner both on and off of the field.  The Homestand Hero award was created three years ago and is given out once each homestand during the Beavers regular season.  One winner from each sport is invited to attend a select Beavers game, at which they are given the opportunity to throw out the Ceremonial First Pitch and recognized for their exemplary accomplishments.

2008 Homestand Hero:

Community Player of the Year - Baseball
Started in 2005, the Community Player of the Year award is presented annually to the Beavers player that most embodies the organization’s community outreach mission.  The creation of this award was partly inspired by the generosity of the inaugural Community Player of the Year winner, Bobby Scales. Giving back to the fans and the community that gives so much to the team has become a priority for the Beavers and we feel fortunate to have players that share in this belief.

For the third consecutive year, Luke Carlin was honored as the Portland Beavers Community Player of the Year.  Despite a 144-game schedule played over the course of 152 days during the season, Carlin lent considerable time and energy to a number of worthwhile causes.

This past season Luke spent time with kids participating in a special Challenge League tournament at PGE Park, interacted with kids at the Portland French School and Vancouver School District Math Academy, helped host the Rowe Middle School Adventure Club at PGE Park and led the team’s annual visit with children staying at Legacy Emmanuel Children’s Hospital among other activities.

Carlin, who resides in Jonesville, N.C., once again anchored the Beavers’ youth baseball camp program, stressing the fun of the game while passing along his considerable baseball knowledge to Portland-area kids during each of the five camps held at PGE Park in 2007. The Beavers’ second-year catcher also helped host a number of Art & Science of Baseball School Days that took place at PGE Park in April and May.

Past winners of the Community Player of the year award:
2007 – Luke Carlin
2006 – Luke Carlin and Justin Leone (co-players of the year)

2005 – Bobby Scales
