Listen to Rich Burk on KKAD AM-1550
Rich Burk, the Voice of the Beavers, has been doing play-by-play for the Beavers since the 2001 season. His entertaining, descriptive broadcasts are considered by many to be the equal of the best broadcasts in the major leagues. This stems from his passion for the National Pastime. “I love everything about this,” said Burk. “In fact, I enjoy preparing for the game nearly as much as I enjoy broadcasting the game. And once the broadcast begins, I like the challenge of weaving the stories of the game, both past and present, into the play-by-play. I really feel blessed to be able to do this for a living, and I believe that comes through on the air.” With 144 games in 153 days, Rich’s number-one job is to keep things fresh. In addition to his duties with the Beavers, Rich has had the opportunity to fill in as radio play-by-play announcer for the San Diego Padres, Montreal Expos and Toronto Blue Jays, and he has been a finalist for three full-time major league play-by-play jobs. People at the highest levels of the game have endorsed his work. "(He) is well-versed in the game," said the now-retired Detroit Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell. "His descriptions are colorful and accurate." Curt Smith, the author of the acclaimed book "Voices of the Game," termed by The Sporting News as "the definitive book on baseball broadcasting," agrees. "I am impressed by Rich's style, baseball knowledge, and ability to tell and sell the game," said Smith. "He has the capacity to make the game come alive." And ESPN.com baseball columnist Rob Neyer is also in Burk’s corner. Neyer calls Burk “The most prepared broadcaster I’ve ever known, at any level.” Neyer, in fact, joins Burk periodically throughout the season, giving his unique baseball insights to the broadcast. Burk spends a great deal of time—particularly during the off-season—promoting the Beavers and baseball through speaking engagements at schools, service clubs and other gatherings. And during the season, he sends out a daily e-mail, The Beaver Preview. If you’d like to be on his distribution list, he can be reached at rburk@pgepark.com.
