Beavers honored for philanthropy

PORTLAND, Ore.The Portland Beavers & Portland Timbers Community Fund (PBPTCF) has been recognized by the Portland Business Journal’s 2009 Corporate Philanthropy Awards, receiving two awards in two categories.

The first award is in the Small Company category and the second is for Innovations in Philanthropy for the partnerships established with local nonprofits. The Corporate Philanthropy Awards were created to recognize the many contributions that businesses of all sizes make to Oregon and Southwest Washington.

“We are honored to be recognized among our peers for these prestigious awards,” said Sierra Smith, manager of community outreach for the Beavers and Timbers. “There is nothing more important to our core mission than community, and we thank the Portland Business Journal for recognizing our efforts in this area.”

The Beavers and Timbers community mission is to make the quality of life better for children and families in the greater-Portland area. The PBPTCF strives to reach this goal through focused giving each year, as well as dedication to strengthening the bond between the two professional teams and their fans through extensive community outreach.

The Portland Beavers & Portland Timbers Community Fund, an advised fund of the Oregon Community Foundation, was established in the summer of 2007 and officially launched in January 2008. The fund has an aggressive goal to distribute more than $100,000 in grants each year to deserving nonprofits in the four-county region surrounding the Portland metro area. As professional sports organizations, the Beavers and Timbers are uniquely positioned to have a positive impact on their surrounding community, and the creation of the PBPTCF is a key component in the effort to maximize outreach initiatives.

To date, the PBPTCF, in partnership with Nike, Ross Electric and Spirit Mountain Casino, has donated more than $205,000 to 40 deserving nonprofits of all sizes in the four-county region. The fund seeks to support organizations that promote one of the following areas of focus: Youth education (specifically the K-12 grade levels); youth team sports and fitness with an emphasis on baseball, softball and soccer-related projects; battling childhood obesity; and environmental awareness and activism with youth and families.

The Beavers and Timbers were among those honored at the Corporate Philanthropy Awards Luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 1.
