PORTLAND, Ore. - Greg Jacobs was 3-for-4 and drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the Tacoma Rainiers defeated the Portland Beavers 5-4 in front of 4,227 Sunday afternoon at PGE Park.
Aaron Rifkin had two doubles and two runs scored, while Jamal Strong turned in a pair of hits and some stellar defensive work for the Rainiers (28-28).
Jeff Heaverlo (1-3) struck out five in 3.1 innings of relief for the win.
Mike Bumstead allowed the winning run in the seventh to fall to 2-2 with the Beavers.
The Beavers (30-27) had several opportunities, but ended up stranding 10 men, twice leaving the bases loaded.
J.J. Furmaniak continued his torrid stretch for the Beavers, going 3-for-4 and reaching base four times while clubbing his ninth home run.
The Beavers took a one-run lead in the fifth, but Miguel Olivo wasted little time in the top of the sixth, taking starter Clay Hensley deep to left with a solo home run, his second blast of the series. Rifkin then doubled and later scored on a wild pitch as the Rainiers went up 4-3.
Portland put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth to tie it. Kerry Robinson and Furmaniak singled, and Ben Johnson and Jon Knott followed with walks against starter Damian Moss, who was taken out of the game after issuing Knott’s free pass that tied things at 4-4. Heaverlo came on to get Tagg Bozied to pop out to end the inning with the bases still loaded.
Strong singled to lead off the seventh, and with two outs, Jacobs drove him in with a single up the middle.
Strong did well to keep the Rainiers out of serious trouble with a pair of impressive running catches, twisting and turning to track down Robinson’s bases-loaded liner to end the second, and later, chasing Jesse Garcia’s drive to center field to avoid further damage in the Beavers’ fifth.
Rifkin and Hunter Brown had consecutive RBI doubles in the second for a 2-0 Tacoma lead.
Moss gave up back-to-back solo home runs to Furmaniak and Johnson to start the third, and Josh Barfield’s two-out bloop single to center drove in Furmaniak to give Portland its only lead in the fifth.
The Beavers and Rainiers resume their series Monday night at 7:05 p.m.
