OBTAINED: Claimed off waivers by the Padres from Pittsburgh, Dec. 20, 2006.

 

Infielder marks his seventh professional season, his third in the Padres system after being claimed off waivers from Pittsburgh after the 2006 season ... spent the majority of the 2007 season at Portland, but made his major league debut that year with the Padres, becoming the first player born in Saudi Arabia to play in the big leagues ... spent his first four seasons in the Pirates system after being selected in the fifth round of the 2003 draft by the club ... signed with Pittsburgh on July 1, 2003 ... is primarily a second baseman, but played exclusively at third base during his rookie 2003 season with Class A Williamsport ... made his Triple-A debut with Indianapolis during the International League playoffs in 2005 ... was rated by Baseball America as the “Best Defensive Infielder” prospect in the Pirates organization entering the 2005 season.

 

PERSONAL: Born Craig Leo Stansberry. … Resides in Plano, Texas, with his wife, Jessie. … Was born in Saudi Arabia, but lived there for only one month (his father spent three years in Saudi Arabia working for a building materials company). … Became the first-ever major league player born in Saudi Arabia when the Padres … recalled him in August 2007. … Is a 2000 graduate of Plano (TX) High School. … Played two seasons of junior college baseball at North Central Texas in Gainesville, Texas, 2001-02, and was a member of the Lions’ 2001 NJCAA national championship team. … Was named to the 2001 JUCO World Series All-Tournament team. … In 2002, played for the Anchorage Bucs of the Alaska Summer League. … Played one season of NCAA baseball at Rice University (2003) and hit .309 with six home runs and 56 RBIs in 70 games to help the Owls capture the College World Series title (teammates with Vincent Sinisi). … Went 3x4 with three runs scored and two RBIs and also assisted on the final out of Rice’s championship-clinching victory over Stanford. … Was named to the 2003 Silver Glove All-Series team as a third baseman.
