Tryout Information
The Portland Beavers do not offer open tryouts for the team. As an affiliated professional baseball team, the Beavers have a player development agreement with a team from Major League Baseball (San Diego Padres). As such, all Beavers players are scouted, recruited and signed to contracts by the Padres, and then assigned to play in Portland.
Each season, the Padres conduct an open player tryout at PGE Park (usually in June). The tryout is not to recruit players to play for the Beavers, rather it is an opportunity for scouts to identify players they may want to sign at a later date to potentially play in the Padres minor league system.
The 2008 tryout will be held at PGE Park on June 20. Registration begins at 8 a.m. The tryout is open to players between the ages of 16 and 22 who were not drafted in the June draft. The tryout is free with no registration or tryout fees involved. Players participating in American Legion summer baseball must have a permission slip signed by a head coach or commander of the Legion post the player represents. All players under the age of 18 must supply a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. The Padres and Beavers supply baseballs, batting helmets, wood bats and one set of catching gear. Participants are encouraged to bring their own wood bat, but no metal bats, and must supply all other playing equipment.
